Role of Alpha Oscillations During Short Time Memory Task Investigated by Graph Based Partitioning

چکیده
In this study, we investigate the clustering pattern of alpha band (8 Hz 12 Hz) electroencephalogram (EEG) oscillations obtained from healthy individuals during a short time memory task with 3 different memory loads. The retention period during which subjects were asked to memorize a pattern in a square matrix is analyzed with a graph theoretical approach. The functional coupling among EEG electrodes are quantified via mutual information in the timefrequency plane. A spectral clustering algorithm followed by bootstrapping is used to parcellate memory related circuits and for identifying significant clusters in the brain. The main outcome of the study is that the size of the significant clusters formed by alpha oscillations decreases as the memory load increases. This finding corroborates the active inhibition hypothesis about alpha oscillations.

Oscillations in the alpha band (9-12 Hz) increase with memory load during retention in a short-term memory task.
To study the role of brain oscillations in working memory, we recorded the scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) during the retention interval of a modified Sternberg task. A power spectral analysis of the EEG during the retention interval revealed a clear peak at 9-12 Hz, a frequency in the alpha band (8-13 Hz). In apparent conflict with previous ideas according to which alpha band oscillations rep...
متن کاملPredicting Normal People’s Reaction Time based on Hippocampal Local Efficiency During a Memory-Guided Attention Task
Background: There are some convincing shreds of evidence indicating that memory can direct attention. The local efficiency of an area in the brain, as a quantitative feature in a complex network, indicates how the surrounding nodes can transfer the information when a specific node is omitted. This feature is a scale for measuring efficient integration of information in the brain. Objectives:...
متن کاملEffects of exercise on spatial memory deficits induced by nucleus basalis magnocellularis lesions
Introduction: Previous studies have shown that exercise enhances cognitive and functional capacities in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we investigated the effect of long-term (60 days) and short- term (10 days) exercise on the spatial memory deficits in an animal model of AD. Methods: Fifty male rats were divided into 5 groups 1) intact, 2) sham, 3) sham-Alzheimer 4) ...

In the experiments with mental marking of the omitted stimulus one of the subjects (SH) showed paradoxical alpha reactivity. Bursts of the alpha oscillations were recorded in 100 per cent of the trials at all electrode locations when he mentally marked omitted tones. The omitted stimulus paradigm applies to intentional component of behaviour during cognitive task performance. Subjects were aske...
